Robert Jensen is a professor in the School of Journalism at the University of Texas and the author of We Are All Apocalyptic Now:  On the Responsibilities of Teaching, Preaching, Reporting, Writing, and Speaking Out.    He spoke candidly with me about the meaning of apocalypse (an unveiling) and the need to say what we see in regards to economics, ecology, violence, and our future.

Peter Rollins, The Idolatry of God (Encore) January 16-22

This week I speak with “pyro-theologian” Peter Rollins.   This is an encore presentation of one of the two or three most popular interviews on Religion For Life.   Among many things we discuss is “divine doubt” and letting go of the need for God to solve our problems.  His latest book is called The Idolatry of God:  Breaking Our Addiction to Certainty and Satisfaction.

“He explores how the Good News actually involves embracing the idea that we can’t be whole, that life is difficult, and that we are in the dark. Arguing that God has traditionally been approached as a product that will render us complete, remove our suffering and reveal the answers, he introduces an incendiary approach to faith that invites us to embrace our brokenness, face our unknowing and accept the difficulties of existence. Only then, he argues, can we truly rob death of its sting and enter into the fullness of life.”

Brene Brown, Daring Greatly (Encore) January 9-15

Dr. Brene Brown has done research on topics no one wants to discuss, shame and vulnerability. Yet it is through these human experiences that we find the courage to “dare greatly” and become “wholehearted.” She has been featured on TED, The Power of Vulnerability, and Listening to Shame.   She is the author of the #1 New York Times bestseller, Daring Greatly.   In this candid conversation she weaves her own experience with her research and thus inspires us all to live courageous lives.

R.W. “Obie” Holman, Queer Clergy

The movement for acceptance and equality for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender people over the last 40+ years has been in many respects a church movement.   The sanctuary is the arena and ordination to ministry has been the prize.  RW “Obie” Holman describes the movement and the participants in his newly released book, Queer Clergy:  A History of Gay and Lesbian Ministry in American Protestantism.   He blogs at Spirit of a Liberal.   He spoke with me on Religion For Life about the civil rights movement of our time.
